Humphrey the Bus

We purchased a beautiful 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia last year. We pictured nights spent lounging on the beach, pop-top up, and sleeping in th ecomfort of our mobile “home.” We didn’t figure that we’d need to put so much work into it right away, but that’s how it goes with vehicles 30+ years old and air-cooled.

We’ve got a long-ish list of those classic wedding registry items – you know, the bowls, cups, placemats, and panini maker that will obviously transform our life into marital bliss. For those who aren’t as thrilled with the idea of a salad bowl, but still want to contribute something extraordinarily unique that we will love, explore with me some options for working on our van. It’s a Pimp My Ride, but instead of Ice Cube it’s you and me, in a garage somewhere, installing a solar panel or a gas heater or maybe designing and building a custom interior.

The ideas I’ll explore in other posts are probably for the pretty mechanically inclined. If you’re comfortable wielding an acetylene torch, working with a bench saw, or stuffing CV joints then these ideas might be for you!

There’s a couple of things that will always be necessary for any job, most of which I don’t own or have direct access to. We’d love for you to consider gifting the use of these things while we complete some cool projects!:

  • A garage: At least 7 feet tall and with room to spread out is nice to have! We don’t have a garage so if you’d like to consider lending us yours for a couple days, a week, or even longer, that’d be awesome!
  • 3-ton jackstands: Gotta get Humphrey up off the ground.
